The Company: EPI, a custom printer and fulfillment company located in Battle Creek, Michigan

The Situation:
EPI has grown significantly over the past several years. To keep up with this expansion, the company added to their facilities and reconfigured their existing space several times. But as their space got tighter and tighter, the need for a more permanent, creative solution became clear. In early 1999, EPI found a neighboring building that they could buy and move into, bringing their corporate offices under one roof again.

The Challenge:
The building that EPI purchased for their new headquarters - formerly owned by the Archway Corporation - is a beautiful brick structure that features many private offices, large open spaces, huge windows and lots of vintage charm. EPI wanted to preserve and even accentuate the building's character, while converting the space into an efficient, modern office place.

What WMOI Did:
Having worked with EPI since 1995, WMOI has a good understanding for the company, and great respect for their customer-service orientation. That relationship grew even stronger as we worked with EPI and their interior designers to create their vision for the new company offices.

The solution includes using short-paneled workstations in the Design, Sales, and Accounting areas, allowing natural light from the building's large windows to reach the middle of the floorplan. Wood veneers as well as lighter colored fabrics and carpets are used extensively to complement the building's striking woodwork. EPI's management team is positioned in the building's private offices, which are also designed to coordinate with the building's large windows, gardens and landscapes.

Overall, the finished project gives EPI the efficient, comfortable and unified environment that they were looking for - without compromising the building's heritage that they longed to preserve.
